The Broken West to Tour with A.C. Newman! (or vis versa) + new A.C. Material (!)

hey momma, as you might have just read, the boys will be playing with the achingly talented and hook infected, A.C. Newman, of course, of the pop heavy-weights, The New Pornographers.

here are the dates (ahem ... Lacey, 2 Penna dates!)

02/23/09 San Diego, CA Casbah
02/24/09 Los Angeles, CA Troubadour French Kicks
02/27/09 Portland, OR Doug Fir Lounge AA Bondy, French Kicks
03/17/09 Philadelphia, PA Johnny Brenda's AC Newman
03/18/09 Washington, DC Black Cat AC Newman

Rushmore - Cat Stevens, The Faces

hey momma, i know you've had to endure some electro blee beats that your not into as of late, so i brings the comfort food this evening. i got home from a shift today and had the irresistible urge to take my own stinging advice (someone i work with hadn't seen rushmore since forever ago, or some trivial injustice) and watch [Rushmore] once again. i piddled about the house while is was on, but it was comforting nonetheless as the wine peeps teri had on fresh air were both charming and gut-wrenchingly repulsive with all their lack of pretension pretension, but you know.
So, from the soundtrack of said movie are Cat Stevens and The Wind, terrorist ALERT!, and The Faces with Ohh La LA.

X-Mas Hoopla - Okkervil River, Rilo Kiley, Rufus Wainwright

hey momma, we both know going out in the public sphere in November and December can be downright excruciating, owing, of course, to the painful, non-stop assault of the jesus birthday music. Yes, it can not only be trite and redundant but, alas, soul crushing, as well.
so, in the spirit of The Boss's famous holiday song,

i've collected a few numbers that won't make you want to rip your head clean off your body, as i was melodramatically contemplating as daniela rolled her eyes, repeatedly, while eating out at Freddy's this past weekend.

My Space - Black Before Red, Oh No! Oh My!, The Early Tapes

hey momma, you've might of heard of "the my space" that all the kids are into these days. while facewhatevs might have taken over the so-called peer to peer networking blee blah, music is still ignored there.
So, paired with a couple you tube videos and a single from the early tapes, are the local bands respective my space pages. bookmark them and occasionally check in to see if they've blogged something cray cray important about the status of The Band, or if they'll be playing @ a bar near you any time soon. an in-store @ hastings? an acoustic set show at the barnes and noble etc, perhaps?

The Flaming Lips - Christmas on Mars

wayne is the one cut off above. don't worry, you'll see plenty of him below.

this is the quite the long delayed and highly anticipated lips feature that wayne made in his backyard with warner bro. backing (to whatever degree). daniela saw it with wayne live and in full effect @ the drafthouse the sat urday we were here. and from what i gather, needs a 2nd viewing to give a fully thought out opinion. it seems to me slightly more non-narrative than i previously thought. hopefully the drafthouse will continue to show it occasionally through the holidays. it has the chance, and it seems is betting on, becoming a cult classic.

this next selection is from a another era, as you will recognize with respect to the clothes and youth culture, as wayne reflects with ... his brother (?) (i can't recall the connection, it's been so long since i've seen fearless freaks (let someone borrow it ...)) about the football games they once played as a bunch of OK boys with long hair and spliffs.

The Decemberists - Valencia (video)

hey momma, in the spirit of good family cheer, because, lord help us, if we don't all get our allotment of good family cheer in these upcoming festive & relaxing days of the late nov and dec. lovefest ... i bring you a decemberist short/ music video, a la thriller, for the benefit of your nephew, my cousin, jonathan, who is quite the fan.

& BONUS (!) (!) ... a new song that broke only days a ago (a record for music for momma)! and it's good! there's another new single floating out there that i've heard that i remember as more brooding and, possibly, better, but i can't recall the name.

MIA/BLAQSTARR - Way Down in the Hole

hey momma, with thanks to daniela for the tip, i've embedded M.I.A MIA/Blaqstarr's cover of tom wait's and The Wire's "Way Down in the Hole."

Unfortunately, this year Michael's The Wire themed Halloween never made it to fruition, which is probably for the best, as their would of been a whole lot of prezbo's and herc's in our white(ish) group of friends. Black-face is for frats and pockets of that still american deep south mentality and, thus, by that definition, unacceptable. that being said, i still think i could have gotten deep into character, brought out some gay mojo and a glimmer of absolute power in the eyes, and, as pasty as i am coming off a year of working late nights, gone and conquered as the iconic, Omar.

Wait. you've heard of the wire, right? hmmmm ...

They Might Be Giants

hey momma, mtv is now streaming their vaunted vault on the internets. an early mtv band, They Might Be Giants, did not last long with the channel's slow descent into the depths of wherever the hell mtv is these days. but i bring them up to remind you of their children's song work. i haven't heard most of it, but how do these guys not engage and entertain the brains of a 7 year old? goofy, eccentric and catchy music. it's their demo!

the 44th - OBAMA

what does this mean? i mean, of course, i'm more than ecstatic. we just came from scholz's where the place was positively electric. daniela, michael, leyla, tony and i, amongst others, all embraced heartily and had earnest quasi-dopey grins plastered on our faces. but his 4year presidency? all i can say is, unlike this morning, i'm optimistic.

November 4th 2008 ... in the morning

hey momma, here we are, election day, and my stomach is this brew of anxiety and ... well ... more anxiety. we're going to our friend's, travis and sarah, election night community gathering for the (hopeful) state by state re-colorization of these, our american states. of course, there will be booze for celebratin' or to help along our fingers a movin', clicking our collective way towards plane tickets the fuck out of dodge.

for like real serious. like super serious. with a mccain/ palin executive branch after the bush/cheney clusterfuck how could we continue to exist? i can almost hear the world's shotgun barrel clicks with that ticket punched. and when mccain sits at that desk, sensing the hostility, he'll just say the word and the missiles will start a flyin' ... see above. optimism is not allowed at music for momma ... for the moment.

check out this classic FRONTLINE from 2004 that calmly shows the people seated behind the breathy politicians (republicans, most victoriously) and how they are able to manipulate and bend language to their ends. brilliant. if anyone wants to gift me a FRONTLINE box set (by theme or the entire library) i am sure you will get a special seat in heaven.

Duck, You Sucker and Icky Thump

hey momma, check out the similarities between Ennio Morricone's score in, Duck You Sucker (aka a Fistful of Dynamite)* and The White Stripes Icky Thump! i can see jack grooving on leone and there is a Spanish flavor to the album. in terms of the master, how do you not at least appreciate (and appropriate) some aspect of his production? i couldn't tell you.

*there's an interesting discussion on the above wikipedia link about why the differing titles

the latest White Stripes album icky thump was not universally loved or liked by friends of mine and varying unkind statements were directed their de-troit way. i think they are all silly and should have 2 **homeskillet points taken away from them. i think it, you know, icky rocks!

I rented a leone triple feature from i luv and have began with Duck You Sucker ... i popped over here @ the 1st act plot point when i had to check on icky thump, so i'll let you know how they all turn out. i'm also working on X-Mas gifts while sitting through the infinite number extreme long and close shots cut together and, check this, have made a vow (recorded on daniela's phone) that i will be finished making all gifts (and the possible occasional purchase) by the 16th of december, mmhmmm, that's right(!) so i need to be cracking throughout the movies, and beyond.

Thrill the World Austin

hey Momma, so Daniela's been on all our cases to learn the thriller dance for months now through alamo sponsored lessons. the date finally loomed large and we jumped in at the last second to learn it. clocking in at nearly 6 and a 1/2 minutes, some time was needed to know when to, well ... this

which all gave way to the official Guinness Record Breaking (smashing, more like it) thriller spectacular a la austin, tx ... mary, mary's momma barbara franzosa, daniela, and myself are in the top left corner of your screen ... somewhere ... working it out in our best mj homages. nearly everyone in attendance was in character (i had my thrashed jeans and zombie make-up) which was quite the sight to behold. flip through some flickr accounts linked to from the official site or try searching flickr itself.

well, since on occasion, you have this song on repeat in your head or popping out of some speakers, it might as well be here, as well.
i copied and pasted a letterman taping and a Melkweg, Amsterdam show - let me tell you, these boys are major label players and lean to their respective markets well. fo sure. with letterman, issac looks like a hired gun banjo picker a la Vampire Weekend, not that there's anything wrong with that, but in the 2nd, they're all a little more unhinged.
